"Tergitol" NPX can be substituted by "Triton" X100, "Renex" 690 or 697, or "Poly Tergent" B-300.
Melt the "A-C" Polyethylene 629 and the "Tergitol" NPX together at 257F (max). When completely melted, cool to 230F and slowly add the KOH solution with stirring to break up the foam that forms.
NOTE: Care should be exercised in this operation. If the temperature is too high or the solution is added too rapidly, the material will foam over the top of the heating kettle.
While the "A-C" Polyethylene 629 is being melted, heat the water to boiling (turn off heat just before using).
With rapid stirring (but below speed at which air is incorporated), slowly add the melt to the water (1-3 minutes). During the addition, the temperature of the melt should be maintained at 230F, and the water maintained at 203-210F (not boiling). Add the melt at a steady rate to the top of the vortex formed by the stirring; it should not hit the side of the vessel or the shaft of the stirrer, but spiral down the vor |
