Melt the "Epolene" E-10 and fatty acids; then cool to 120C (250F).
Add the morpholine to the "Epolene" E-10 melt with stirring, and heat at 120C (250F) for one to two minutes.
This step is probably the most critical one in the emulsification of "Epolene" E-10 and should be closely controlled. Morpholine boils at about 128C (262F); prolonged heating will evaporate the amine and cause poor emulsification. At this stage, the progress of the reaction can be followed by noting the appearance of the melt. When the amine is first added, the melt is hazy. After the reaction, the melt becomes clear. While maintaining good but not violent agitation, slowly pour the melt into water which has been heated to 95-97C (203-207F).
Violent or too rapid agitation results in the formation in the liquid of a vortex which often exposes the agitator or stirrer. Molten material contacting the exposed agitator may solidify on the surface and then separate from the agitator and be dispersed in the emulsion as so |
