Approximately 1,000 gallons of "room temperature" water are placed in the starch cooking kettle. Add 800 pounds of selected starch and modifying reagents. The starch is put through its regular recommended cooking cycle. After completing the cooking cycle for the starch, slowly add 24-40 or 80 pounds of "PAPERMAKERS FLUID COLLOID" directly to the starch cooker, maintaining continuous agitation (basis 3,5 or 10%).
Continue agitation for approximately 10 minutes. Drop to size holding tanks and dilute to required solids content-hold at 140-150F.
It is suggested that if defoamers are used in the normal starch sizing, these defoamers should be continued. An excellent suggestion is Pluronic L-61.
The amount of Fluid Colloid may be increased or decreased for optimum results. (In some cases, depending upon porosity of paper, addition of 3 to 5% PAPERMAKERS FLUID COLLOID is adequate).
Use: This prepared "surface sizing solution" is usually applied at the Size Press.
