The sodium hydroxide is dissolved in 250 gal of the water, after which the glue is added and allowed to soak and swell for two hours with brief, intermittent stirring. Then, the solution is steam-cooked at 130 to 140F to completely disperse the glue. A buffered solution is made with the remaining 100 gal of water and borax. the hot glue dispersion is added to it with stirring, and after thorough mixing the new solution is diluted to the desired Baume. Mixing the two solutions brings the system to about the proper temperature for sizing (90 to 115F). If desired, 12 lb of a suitable filler can be suspended in the buffered solution. this kind of glue size is not, however, sufficiently resistant to water to permit usage of the paper under conditions of high humidity or actual exposure to water. Therefore, the sized paper is passed through a second solution containing approximately 2% glyoxal, 1% aluminum sulfate, and a small amount of a suitable wetting agent.
